US threatens nationwide Tiktok ban

The US is getting serious: as the Wall Street Journal reports, the country has threatened Chinese parent company Bytedance with a nationwide ban on the app.

Accordingly, the United States had given the Chinese company an ultimatum: either Bytedance would sell its shares in the app, or Tiktok would be completely banned in the United States.

According to the newspaper, the ultimatum came from the American authority CFIUS. This is responsible for the risk assessment of foreign investments for national security. Neither the White House nor Tiktok would comment on the report. For months, there have been concerns in the US and other Western countries that the Chinese state could access Tiktok user data through Bytedance.

App has already been removed from US government devices

With a billion users worldwide, Tiktok is especially popular with the younger generation. You can make short videos, an algorithm will suggest videos to watch. The use of the short video service has recently increased sharply in the US, including among older internet users. More than 100 million people use the app. Tiktok has already overtaken other networks such as Youtube, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook in terms of time spent on it.
