Now Zurich trams are being sent to Ukraine

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

In the western Ukrainian city of Vinnitsa, scrapped Tram2000 vehicles will soon be running in the city of Zurich: the Russian war of aggression will no longer affect deliveries, but will affect the training of Ukrainian personnel, the Zurich Transport Authority (VBZ) announced on Wednesday.

Zurich’s trams are nothing new in Vinnitsa. Between 2007 and 2011, Mirage and Karpfen vehicles were transported to the Ukrainian city, where they have been in service ever since.

In June 2021, the Zurich Transport Authority and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) agreed to hand over 35 decommissioned Tram2000 vehicles.

VBZ does not send employees to Ukraine

The project was temporarily suspended due to the outbreak of war. “After the war situation became more stable again at the end of summer 2022, Seco was able to conduct a more accurate risk assessment and resume operations,” the statement said.

The first eight trams of this series have now been cleaned of harmful substances and are in intermediate storage in Dielsdorf ZH. From there they now have to be taken by train to the Ukrainian border.

Due to the war, employees of the transport company Vinnitsa could not complete a longer internship in Zurich, the VBZ states in its press release. Last November and December, three people could have been trained in the maintenance and repair of the Tram2000 in the central workshop and in the tram depots for four weeks.

This time, the VBZ will not send its own employees to Ukraine. They would also advise ex-employees against such a trip.

However, VBZ experts will be available to advise their Vinnitsa colleagues. Zurich’s public transport company is also confident that their colleagues in Vinnitsa can successfully operate the Tram2000 based on their experience with the old Mirages.

According to the announcement, the decommissioned City of Zurich Tram2000 vehicles are in operational condition. They can be used in Ukraine for another 12 to 15 years. (SDA)
