Thousands protest pension reform in France

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

In addition, there were strikes again on Wednesday, including in the transport sector, with fewer disruptions than on previous days of protest. Representatives from both chambers of parliament met on Wednesday to discuss a compromise proposal for the reform. The Senate and then the National Assembly will vote on this on Thursday. If approved, the reform is decided.

The core of the reform is raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. The number of mandatory payment years will also increase and the minimum pension will be increased to 1,200 euros. The reform is considered a central project of Macron and his middle government. It is justified with a looming minus in the pension fund. In addition to the trade unions, parts of the opposition have also criticized the plans. Since Macron’s camp no longer has an absolute majority in parliament, he hopes for support from the conservative Républicains on Thursday. It is not yet clear whether enough MPs will vote for the reform.

The government also has the option to frame the text with a special article in the constitution without a vote by the National Assembly. However, given the massive protests against the reform, she should refrain from forcing the project through parliament if possible. (SDA)
