In order not to announce a second wave of mobilization, Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) raised the age of conscripts. Nevertheless, Russia needs more soldiers for the war in Ukraine. Now, according to the Ukrainian General Staff, women from prison will also end up on the battlefield. The reason: the Russians are running out of men.
Due to the “major loss of personnel during the war”, according to the General Staff report, “alternative sources of manpower expansion” were sought. For this, prisoners were taken to the front in Donetsk with an extra train. Extraordinary: only women would have been in one of the wagons.
Human rights activist Olga Romanova (56) of the organization “Russia behind bars” confirms such reports to the investigative news portal “Important Stories”. According to her, captured women were kidnapped from southern Russian colonies. “I don’t know the exact area, but they worked in Kushchevskaya,” she explained. This is an area in Krasnodar. According to Romanova, about 100 prisoners were taken to the front.
As early as February, Ukraine’s General Staff alleged that Russia was attempting to “enlist convict women to take part in hostilities”. According to army statements, 50 women were recruited from the occupied Ukrainian town of Snizhne and sent to Russia for training. Later, these women would return to Ukraine and fight on the side of the Russian army.
It is unclear what function women have in the war zone. According to MP Vyacheslav Wegner, women in penal colonies applied in December to help as doctors or nurses at the front. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (61), according to his own telegram post, would have agreed to this request – but emphasized that the women could also be used as snipers. The Ukrainian report now points more in the direction of a military deployment. (jwg)
