Former US President Jimmy Carter has asked the current sitting president, Joe Biden, to be his eulogy in the event of his own death. “He asked me to deliver his eulogy,” Biden said Monday night (local time), according to reporters who traveled with him on the sidelines of a California event.
Carter, 98, has been receiving palliative care from his family since mid-February. Carter’s health has deteriorated in recent months, US media reported in February. Carter’s niece, Leanne Smith, said in an interview with Fox News Digital in late February that her uncle still has time.
The Democratic politician from the state of Georgia in the southern United States served as President of the United States from 1977 to 1981 until he was replaced by Republican Ronald Reagan. He is the oldest living former president. His successors Reagan and George Bush senior passed away in 2004 and 2018 respectively. In 2002 Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his international services.
Current President Joe Biden has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Carter. The 80-year-old Biden – also from the Democrats – is in close contact with Carter’s family, the broadcaster CNN reported in February. (sda/dpa)
