Sturgeon’s successor is chosen

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Members of Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party (SNP) have had a choice since Monday afternoon between Chancellor of the Exchequer Kate Forbes, Secretary of Health Humza Yousaf and Member of Parliament Ash Regan.

The results should be known on March 27. In all likelihood, the new party leader will then become the ‘first minister’ of Scotland.

Yousaf is considered a close confidant of Sturgeon. The 37-year-old has been supported by senior SNP politicians such as former Deputy Prime Minister John Swinney and British Parliament Party Leader Stephen Flynn. According to experts, however, the 32-year-old Forbes is the favorite of the party, although she admits that, against the prevailing liberal party view, she rejects gay marriage, among other things. Former minister Regan (49), who gave up her post in the cabinet in the dispute over a gender law, is considered an outsider.

It is unclear how many members the SNP has. The Mail on Sunday newspaper reported that the party leadership had given the responsible election service provider the names of about 78,000 people.

Surprisingly, Sturgeon announced her resignation as head of government and party leader in February. The 52-year-old is regarded as a driving force behind proponents of independence from the United Kingdom. With her resignation, the issue of divorce is completely open again.
