Kim Jong Un fires missiles again

North Korea again showed military strength at the start of new US maneuvers with South Korea. According to state media, the North Korean military fired two guided missiles from a submarine towards the open sea.

A nuclear deterrent test was held in Pyongyang on Monday. In the internationally largely isolated country of ruler Kim Jong-un (39), such tests are actually prohibited. South Korea and the US have been preparing for a possible attack for some time. That is also the purpose of the eleven-day Freedom Shield exercise. This military exercise started on Monday. This is the largest joint exercise between the United States and South Korea in five years. With the maneuvers, which will last at least ten days, Seoul and Washington are responding to the “changed security environment” in the region due to increased aggression from North Korea.

Tensions are rising

South Korea’s general staff confirmed the North Korean weapons test from a submarine, but initially spoke only of an unidentified missile. There are differences between the registered data and the information from the self-declared nuclear power North Korea, a spokesman said. According to North Korea, the cruise missiles landed 1,500 kilometers away in the target area in the Sea of Japan. The exercise confirmed the reliability of the weapon system.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated significantly since last year. Despite being banned by UN resolutions, North Korea has increased the scope and speed of its ballistic missile tests, which – depending on the design – can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. It also undertook repeated tests with cruise missiles.

According to the US Forces Korea (USFK), field exercises will also take place during the Freedom Shield maneuver. Several field exercises codenamed Warrior Shield FTX have been underway for weeks. The US has stationed 28,500 troops in South Korea to deter North Korea. Like Japan, South Korea also falls under the nuclear umbrella of the United States. Both Asian countries have no nuclear weapons of their own. (SDA/AFP)
