Her life has been defined for years by hard blows of fate. But Sharon Stone has proven more than once that she is a roly-poly. The American actress has not been defeated by multiple tumors and surgeries, a stroke with cerebral hemorrhage, nine miscarriages, a lost custody battle and several deaths in the family. On the occasion of her 65th birthday on March 10, we look back at her moving life story.
After her first modeling jobs in the Big Apple, Sharon Stone’s acting career began in 1980 with a role in Woody Allen’s (87) Stardust Memories. She then appeared in films such as Police Academy 4 (1987), Action Jackson (1988) and Total Recall (1990), before her breakthrough in 1992 in Basic Instinct. But her role in the erotic thriller, for which she was nominated for both a Golden Globe and a Golden Raspberry, also made negative headlines for years.
Overall, “Basic Instinct” contains many revealing sex scenes, which was too much of a good thing for some viewers at the time. The scene where Stone’s genitals were exposed because she wasn’t wearing any underwear under her dress stuck with a lot of people. Stone later explained that she was unaware of the clothing scene. Accordingly, she would have been told to take off her panties, but no private parts would be recognized. Stone was certainly not aware at the time that her star role would have an impact on her later life as a mother.
What followed their first big screen successes should be unimaginable to the vast majority of people. In September 2001, the American suffered a stroke and as a result a cerebral hemorrhage, with the consequences that she had to contend with for a long time. For nine days she fought for her life in intensive care. Over the next two years, Stone had to relearn how to walk, see, speak and read.
That same year, Stone had multiple benign tumors removed from both of her breasts. However, her operating doctor also performed a breast augmentation on the actress during the procedure — without her consent. The surgeon in charge explained: the new breasts would fit better on her hips. In November 2022, Stone tweeted that she had been diagnosed with another tumor in her uterus and needed another surgery. It’s hard to believe that Stone was faced with yet another serious diagnosis with devastating consequences.
She was diagnosed with endometriosis. These are growths of tissue that resemble the lining of the uterus. Nine miscarriages resulted. “It’s no small thing, physical or emotional. And yet we’re made to feel like this is something we have to deal with alone and in secret, believing we’ve failed,” she wrote in a June 2022 response to an Instagram post on People Despite this “devastating experience,” she never gave up on her desire to have children.
Stone didn’t really work in love either. Her two marriages to Michael Greenburg (from 1984 to 1987) and Phil Bronstein (from 1998 to 2004) broke up. With the latter, in 2000 she adopted Roan Joseph, Stone’s eldest son, who is now 22. However, after Bronstein split, an ugly custody battle ensued, which Stone lost in 2008. She recently spoke on the Apple podcast “Table for Two” about the defeat, which was very hard for her at the time. “Eventually I ended up at the Mayo Clinic,” where she was treated for the time being. Acting faded from the spotlight so she could devote herself fully to her personal life.
Stone is now certain that the loss of custody was also related to her role in “Basic Instinct”. That is why the judge asked her then eight-year-old son if he knew that his mother “makes sex films”. The actress describes this as “a form of abuse by the system”.
Shortly after the divorce from Bronstein, however, luck was on Stone’s side. Single, she adopted two more male newborns in 2005 and 2006. With Quinn Kelly and Laird Vonne, Roan had two younger brothers.
After a period of calm in Stone’s personal and professional life, her family suffered a shocking death in August 2021. Her little nephew, River, died of organ failure when she was just 11 months old. The photos she shared of her brother Patrick Stone’s son and his wife Tasha on Instagram went under the skin and around the world. Only a year and a half later, her brother Patrick closed his eyes forever. He died at the age of 57 from complications from heart disease.
It is amazing that Sharon Stone’s career as an actress did not get out of hand despite all the twists of fate she wrote in her autobiography “The Beauty of Living Twice”, published in 2021.
Over the years, she has repeatedly taken on roles in television series such as “Practice – The Attorneys” or “Law & Order”. Most recently, she was in front of the camera for the films “The Disaster Artist” (2017), “Die Geldlaunerei” (2019) and “Beauty” (2022). And even today, Sharon Stone still outshines everyone on the red carpet.
