‘One was more dramatic than the other’

The massacre in Hamburg still caused horror days later. The alleged perpetrator Philipp F.* († 35) shot seven people at a meeting of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Thursday evening and seriously injured eight people. Then he would have judged himself.

The victims still tried to save their lives by calling 911. Within minutes, police and firefighters received more than 40 such calls.

Caller shot while on the phone

The rescuers themselves also experienced frightening moments. The so-called calltakers were probably the last resort for the Jehovah’s Witnesses under fire.

“The emergency calls on Thursday evening overshadowed everything that had happened so far,” an employee of the operations center of the Hamburg fire brigade told the “Hamburger Morgenpost”.

The man still remembers the emergency calls he received during the killing spree. “One was more dramatic than the other.” Often during the telephone conversation the connection was lost or the receiver suddenly stopped answering. It is believed that some of the callers were shot while still on the phone and begging for help.

“I don’t want to go through it a second time”

Exactly the same was true for his colleagues in the operations center as for him. “Hello, can you still hear me?” had to call someone in multiple times because no one could be heard on the other end of the line.

The dispatcher clearly saw the panic in his colleague’s eyes. “Shot, lots and lots of shots, someone’s shooting around,” he just managed to get out.

Three days after the shocking mission, the shock is still deep. The emergency call worker and his colleagues are now receiving pastoral care. He hopes he never has to complete a mission like Thursday’s again. “I don’t want to experience something like that a second time.” (ceded)
