Thousands at demonstrations after boat accident in Italy

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

About 5,000 protesters took part in a procession on Saturday through the Calabrian town of Steccato di Cutro, where the accident had occurred, the Ansa news agency reported. The demonstration ended with a minute’s silence on the city’s beach, where the bodies had washed up.

Several clubs and movements joined the protest as a sign of solidarity. As shown in photos, the protesters laid a wreath and flowers and held up a cross made from the wreckage of the wrecked wooden boat.

Banners called for concrete measures to prevent such accidents. “Stop dying in the sea immediately” could be on posters, for example.

Meanwhile, emergency services recovered three more bodies in the waters off Steccato di Cutro on Saturday. The bodies are two children and an adult. The number of victims has now risen to 76, a Carabinieri commander confirmed when asked. More people are missing; about 80 people survived the accident.
