It would be just as hot in Spain this weekend, especially in the Mediterranean as it is usually only June or July. The temperature in Murcia can rise above 30 degrees, the national weather service Aemet reported on Saturday. The weather experts stressed that this could be a heat record for March.
In other parts of the country it is also getting too hot for the time of year. On the popular holiday island of Mallorca, which was still struggling with snow chaos two weeks ago, it is pleasant around 22 degrees. In general, the climate in Spain, as in other parts of Europe, has been getting hotter and drier for years, largely attributed to human-induced climate change.
Heat and lack of rain hit Spain and other regions of Europe hard last year. With peak temperatures of over 40 degrees, it was one of the hottest since the weather records began in Spain.
Because there was far too little precipitation in parts of the country last autumn and winter, the water shortage threatens to worsen next summer. The reservoirs are currently on average just over 40 percent full. The average over the past ten years at this time of year was 58 percent. The danger of severe forest fires such as last year also remains high.
The situation in Andalusia and Catalonia is dramatic. The reservoirs there are only about a quarter full. In Catalonia in the northeast of the country with the tourist metropolis of Barcelona, water consumption in agriculture and industry has already been restricted. In parks and gardens, only trees may be watered. If the rain stops, the head of the regional water board, Samuel Reyes, expects restrictions on private drinking water consumption from the autumn, he told the newspaper “El País”. (sda/dpa)
