The Chinese People’s Congress has elected Li Qiang (63) as the new prime minister of China. As expected, the nearly 3,000 hand-picked delegates voted overwhelmingly for the politician at their current annual conference in the Great Hall of the People. Li Qiang succeeds Li Keqiang (67), who is retiring after ten years.
Unlike his predecessor, Li Qiang, who was most recently party leader in Shanghai, belongs to President Xi Jinping’s camp and is considered a close confidant of the state and party leader.
On Friday, Xi Jinping was confirmed by the People’s Congress for an unusual third term as president. At the party congress in October, the 69-year-old had already flouted previously respected age and tenure restrictions and enshrined a firm leadership role in party statutes. With his sole rule, he joins state founder and revolutionary Mao Tsetung, who, however, had brought chaos to the country.
The week-long annual conference, which lasts until Monday, will see the biggest government reshuffle in a decade, with Xi Jinping’s closest confidants in particular standing up. (SDA/AFP/chs)
