Russian oligarch Sergey Grishin dies after criticizing Putin

Another Russian businessman has died under mysterious circumstances. According to various media reports, the oligarch Sergey Grishin († 56) died on Monday in a hospital in Moscow. Officially, the oligarch suffered from a circulatory disorder in the brain, which led to blood poisoning – but critics have their doubts.

Not without reason: Grishin was a critic of Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin (70). Shortly before his death, he had publicly attacked the regime. He asked then US President Donald Trump (76) for a residence permit for the US: “I want to be safe,” said the Russian. “I am under attack from the criminal world in Russia, including from top officials in the Russian government.”

Harry and Meghan bought his $15 million mansion

But apparently Trump did not respond to Grishin’s request. Instead, the entrepreneur known by the nickname “Scarface Oligarch” spent the last part of his life in Russia. This after he sold his luxury estate in Montecito, California, to the ex-Duke and Duchess of Sussex – to Harry (38) and Meghan (41). The two bought it in 2020 for about $14.6 million.

Sergey Grishin was nicknamed the “Scarface Oligarch” because he owned the mansion where the 1983 Al Pacino movie of the same name was filmed. Grishin was once a co-owner of the so-called Rosevrobank and boasted that he brought the Russian banking system to its knees with a $60 billion scam in the 1990s. In another scam, he allegedly used invisible ink on checks.

“Suddenly and unexpectedly” died

This is not the first mysterious death since the start of the war in Ukraine. Specifically, it involves a long list of unsolved deaths or deaths whose cause of death is extremely controversial – mostly among the Russian elite.

Most recently, the death of doctor Natalia T.* († 63) made headlines, who gave birth to illegitimate children together with Alina Kabaeva (39) in Ticino. She had talked about his otherwise secret private life. Officially, she died of cancer.

Before that it was the death of top civil servant Marina Yankina († 58), who – for unknown reasons – fell almost fifty meters from a high building. In addition, the death of former naval chief Alexander Busakov († 66) was announced a few weeks ago. He too would have died “suddenly and unexpectedly”.

Several other managers of Russian energy companies have been found dead since the beginning of this year. They would all have committed suicide. Gazprombank’s longtime deputy head Igor Volobuyev (51) doubts such “suicides” – in the middle of last year he spoke of targeted crimes when the same thing happened. Volobuyev has switched sides and says he will now fight in Ukraine. (two)
