On United’s domestic flight 2609 from Los Angeles to Boston on March 5, a man with a broken spoon attacked the crew and attempted to take over the plane. A prisoner filmed the bizarrely dangerous scenes that unfolded before he was overpowered:
The man would have tried to open an emergency exit about 45 minutes before landing. The crew received a warning. However, due to the high cabin pressure, the door could not be opened. Then the man began to threaten the prisoners with confused statements. He eventually attacked two crew members with a broken spoon, but was overpowered by several passengers before anyone was injured.
After the plane landed safely in Boston, the man was arrested. He is now on the no-fly list at United. He also faces life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
ABC7 reports that the man has been a patient in at least two psychiatric hospitals in the past. (lzo)
