Known for his brutality, he sends his own sons to war against Ukraine and even threatens Poland with a Russian attack. But Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov (46) also has a tender side – when it comes to people rather than horses.
Kadyrov has especially taken a stallion to his heart. His name: Zazu. But the English thoroughbred suddenly disappeared from his stable in the Czech town of Roudnice nab Labem. Stolen! The police are investigating and even published a police photo of the animal on Tuesday.
As the Czech media wrote on Tuesday, the theft happened on the night from Friday to Saturday. They estimate the value of the thoroughbred horse at 16,000 francs. A brutal understatement, says Kadyrov. The English thoroughbred Zazu cost no less than 9.5 million francs.
The search by the Czech police is in full swing. As a spokeswoman said, unknown perpetrators “removed the security chain and took the stallion.” “We are intensively looking for the perpetrator of the theft and the stolen horse,” said a spokeswoman. The public is also being asked for help.
The otherwise unscrupulous warlord seems completely decomposed. He suspects a personal act of revenge. “I don’t think it was a coincidence,” Kadyrov wrote on Russia’s Telegram news service on Wednesday. He hopes that his zazu is doing well. Because: “It is a pity that a beautiful and noble animal suffers.”
The stallion was sanctioned in 2014 after Russia annexed Crimea. At that time, the Chechen leader’s horses still took part in races. However, the prize money that Kadyrov won was never paid to him. As the Wall Street Journal wrote, Zazu won more than 1.2 million francs in prize money during his career as a racehorse – winning “the hearts of millions of viewers,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.
“It turns out that Zazu is to blame for everything that happens in this world,” Kadyrov responded sarcastically to the decision to have his stallion inspected. To this day, the Chechen leader does not understand. “Zazu was the first victim of the sanctions against me, my family and the team.”
Curious: This isn’t Zazu’s first kidnapping attempt. In January 2022, two Russian-speaking men tried to steal the animal. They claimed to have received orders from Kadyrov to bring the expensive stallion to Poland. However, the stable did not release the animal.
“I’m afraid that Zazu will fall into the wrong hands,” says Kadyrov concerned. The thoroughbred stallion is not the only horse in the Czech Republic. In total, the Brutalo ruler has five sanctioned horses in stables there, one of which has died in the past year. However, Zazu was by far the most valuable.
Kadyrov has been president of Chechnya since 2007 – his methods of government include torture, rape, intimidation and kidnapping.
