China is known for severely censoring many areas of social life, especially the internet. This recently also includes that women are no longer allowed to appear online in lingerie for advertising purposes. A corresponding law came into force in January. The intention: The distribution of “obscene material” must be prevented.

Companies that employed female models had to close their doors first. Then they found a solution: male models. So that the companies can advertise their lingerie again.

In the accompanying videos, the men wear different variations of women’s underwear: push-up bras, corsets and nightgowns with lace trimmings. Tight pink dresses with slits almost to the waist and even oversized cat ear headbands are also represented by male models. Such accessories are very popular in China.

“We don’t mean these actions ironically, we just follow the rules”

Many Chinese social media outlets are now accusing men of taking jobs from women. An entrepreneur who now uses male models does not think the criticism is justified. “Many directors of these live streams are women. Are people also stealing men’s jobs? We don’t mean these actions ironically, we just follow the rules.” Especially after the months of corona lockdowns, companies finally wanted to make money again.

According to studies by Coresight Research, a Chinese market research firm, e-commerce is very common in China. The customers shop live. Models show products via live stream, buyers can immediately enjoy discounts and special offers – a kind of teleshopping in the internet age. Three-quarters of the potential customer segment choose this shopping experience.

The new lingerie rules have received a mixed reception in China. Some people are amused, some are annoyed – and still others take it with resigned acceptance. (A)
