That said Louisa Vinton, representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Turkey, on Tuesday in Geneva. The World Bank, UNDP and the EU, among others, contributed to the estimate. “On top of that comes the cost of reconstruction,” Vinton said.
UNDP is organizing a donor conference in Brussels on 16 March. How much money is actually needed has not yet been determined. The earthquake in early February killed more than 50,000 people in both countries and left millions homeless. More than 46,000 died in Turkey alone. The damage is also considerable in northern Syria.
Shortly after the earthquake, the United Nations requested donations of $1 billion for Turkey’s most pressing needs. Just under 10 percent of that had been received early this week, Vinton said.
The United Nations is concerned about asbestos. “We see a great danger in this,” Vinton said. The UNDP is trying to provide money for protective clothing for the workers who are clearing the rubble as quickly as possible. (SDA)
