Archaeologists have discovered a ‘smiling sphinx with two dimples’ at the Temple of Hathor in southern Egypt. Next to the limestone sphinx discovered in a two-story tomb was a Roman stela with ancient Egyptian inscriptions and hieroglyphs, which researchers hope will help clarify who the sphinx is believed to represent, the tourism and antiquities ministry said Monday. They therefore believe that it could be the Roman Emperor Claudius.
Egypt has presented a large number of archaeological finds in recent years. Only last Thursday did the authorities announce the discovery of a hidden nine-metre-long corridor in the pyramid of Cheops. Critics warn that the finds are more about media attention than proper research.
In fact, after years of political instability and the corona pandemic, Egypt, which is in an economic crisis with its archaeological treasures, wants to boost tourism, which is so important to the country. The limit of 30 million tourists per year must be reached by 2028 – before the corona pandemic that was 13 million per year. (AFP)
