“The situation is deteriorating rapidly”: Amnesty calls for action against Taliban in Afghanistan Jets-Niederreiter and Kings-Fiala score in home wins

The human rights organization Amnesty International has called on member states of the United Nations (UN) to take action in view of the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s impunity must end, the London-based organization demanded on Monday. “It is time for the international community to respond to its repeated public statements,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty’s Secretary General.

“The human rights situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating rapidly,” Callamard said. Every day the Taliban carried out “relentless attacks”. However, the Islamists are unable or unwilling to prosecute human rights violations within their own ranks. That is why an independent monitoring body must be set up in Afghanistan.

Since militant Islamists returned to power in August 2021, Amnesty has documented arrests of women’s rights activists, journalists and civilians in Panjir province and massacres of the Hazara Shiite minority in three provinces. Detainees are denied legal aid and contact with their families, it said. (sda/dpa)
