Greek ex-deputy minister fined after Novartis scandal

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

This was announced on Saturday from legal circles. The judges in Athens acquitted Dimitris Papangelopoulos of other charges related to the scandal, as reported by Just on Saturday. Anti-corruption investigator Eleni Touloupaki was fully acquitted, according to the information. She had been instrumental in exposing the scandal but was charged with “abuse of power”.

Papangelopoulos was a member of the left-wing government of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. When the Novartis scandal broke in 2016, the Tsipras government accused some 100 doctors, 30 civil servants and 10 politicians from previous governments of involvement in the case. Between 2006 and 2015, they allegedly agreed to lucrative contracts for Novartis and outrageous drug prices in exchange for cash payments.

The current Conservative government accused both Papangelopoulos and Touloupaki of hatching a “conspiracy” to use the investigations to harm their political opponents. None of the 10 politicians from previous administrations investigated in connection with the Novartis scandal were ultimately convicted.
