There is no snow in Switzerland, but there is currently plenty of snow in otherwise sunny California. A state of emergency has been declared in 13 US counties.
And the end of the winter storm is not yet in sight. Heavy snowfall is expected again on Monday, according to the weather forecast. In the mountains of the otherwise dry Sierra Nevada, the snow cover will rise to more than 2.5 meters.
Streets and access roads must be cleared of snow and power must be restored in many places. In addition, it must be ensured that food and water also reach vulnerable populations. More than 82,000 households were without power.
Central inland districts along the Sierra Nevada were affected, as were popular excursion destinations in mountainous communities such as Lake Tahoe or Lake Arrowhead. Yosemite National Park remained closed until further notice due to record-breaking amounts of snow.
Even further south in the actually sun-drenched area around the metropolis of Los Angeles, the amazement about the unknown white man continued. The mountains in the background of the famous ‘Hollywood’ inscription above the Los Angeles district of the same name were also presented entirely in white.
The snow also has its good side: California gets about a third of its drinking water from the snow. Due to drought, there is often a lack of water, which should not be so great this year.
According to the region’s weather service, the snow line fell to around 300 meters in some places. As California continued to struggle with frigid winter weather, the US Weather Service warned of severe storms and extreme rainfall in the Midwest that could trigger flooding.
It’s not the first slew of storms to hit California this winter. At the beginning of January it rained heavily for days, there were floods, mudslides, roads and houses were destroyed and about 20 people died. (gf/SDA)
