“Come on!” Lavrov is blatantly laughed at by the audience at a conference in India How the lab thesis gets Joe Biden into trouble

This would never happen in Russia: the audience bursts into laughter at a panel discussion in India. The reason was a statement by the Russian Foreign Minister that should not have been funny at all.

That is unlikely to happen too often to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: When he again blamed the West for the war in Ukraine – in English – at a conference in the Indian capital New Delhi on Friday, he was audience interrupted. When asked about his country’s energy policy, he said:

“You know, the war that we are trying to end that has been unleashed against us, in which Ukraine was used…”

At that moment the audience burst into laughter and Lavrov, visibly confused, began to stagger. Then he added that[de oorlog]influenced Russian policy, including energy policy. Midway through the sentence, he was greeted by a loud “Come on!” interrupted. Lavrov continued: Russia will never depend on partners in the West again. They prefer reliable partners in energy policy, certainly including India and China.

It was remarkable that Lavrov described the war in this way. So far, the Kremlin has avoided this and speaks of a “military special operation”.

At the end of the 30-minute talk broadcast by news website Firstpost at the Raisina conference, the moderator bid Lavrov farewell and asked him if he could promise that the next talk would take place in less dangerous times. “The Americans will certainly suggest some questions for you to use”, said Lavrov, stood up, smiled and walked off stage laughing. The multilateral geopolitical and economic conference, organized by a think tank and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, takes place annually in New Delhi.

The laughter at Lavrov’s performance caused a great resonance on social networks. Lavrov becomes a joke, the world power is simply laughed at, it must be embarrassing, according to various reactions.

India has strong economic and military ties with Russia and wants to remain neutral. Much of the equipment used by the Indian Armed Forces comes from Russia. Recently, the South Asian country with the second largest population after China abstained in the UN General Assembly in a vote for a resolution on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The resolution contains the demand for peace and Moscow’s withdrawal. (saw/sda/dpa)
