Wagenknecht no longer wants to compete for the left

For a long time she was one of the best-known figureheads of left-wing politics in Germany. Now Sahra Wagenknecht and the party “Die Linke” have apparently grown apart. “I rule out running to the left again,” she told the “Rheinpfalz” newspaper.

After the legislature, she wanted to withdraw from politics and work as a publicist and author, Sahra Wagenknecht (53) told the newspaper on Friday. However, she left a back door open to her political career, adding: “Or there will be something new politically.”

The most popular German politician on the left of the Greens and SPD left it open whether she would set up her own party. “It’s talked about in a lot of places,” she said simply. According to her, the problem is that many people in Germany no longer feel really represented by anyone in the current spectrum of parties.

Criticism of the “Manifesto for Peace”

In recent days, Wagenknecht was criticized for a ‘Peace Manifesto’ that he had written together with publicist Alice Schwarzer (80) about the Russian offensive war in Ukraine and a large meeting in Berlin. The two prominent women are calling for an end to arms deliveries to Ukraine and the start of negotiations. More than half a million people have now signed the manifesto calling for peace talks with Russia over the war in Ukraine.

The document states, among other things, that Ukraine cannot win a war against the world’s largest nuclear power. Negotiation does not mean capitulating, but ‘compromising on both sides’ with the aim of ‘avoiding hundreds of thousands of deaths and worse’.

Wagenknecht has been a member of the German parliament since 2009. From 2015 to 2019, she was co-chair of the Left Party faction. She is currently a member of the Bundestag. (nad)
