Is the war spreading to Russian territory? Heavy fighting is said to have broken out on Russian soil this week. Russian forces, with the support of the Defense Ministry, carried out an operation to “destroy armed Ukrainian nationalists” in the Bryansk region, near the Ukrainian border.
The Russian domestic secret service FSB announced this to the Interfax news agency on Thursday. Fighting on Russian soil is also said to have broken out in other places. The information cannot be verified.
According to “Interfax”, Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) has convened a special meeting of the National Security Council for Friday. However, not much is known about its contents. When asked if the “special operation” promoted by Russia would now turn into a war, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, 55, apparently said: “I don’t know, I can’t say yet.”
After the alleged battles on home soil, the Russian military elite is now urging Putin to carry out massive reprisals. According to Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (61), the Ukrainian armed forces have crossed a “red line”, writes the American think tank “Institute of the Study of War” (ISW).
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov (46) and the head of the Russian occupation of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov (50) called for drastic retaliation. Kadyrov even calls for attacks on Ukrainian civilians, which amounts to an indirect call for war crimes, the ISW writes.
Military bloggers also say that Russia must now set up a high command to win the war by any means necessary. So there should soon be an execution squad to kill high-ranking Ukrainian politicians.
However, according to the ISW, the harsh words also show that the Russian elite is extremely dissatisfied with the way Putin and the Kremlin are conducting the war in Ukraine. The demands are a result of the Russian military’s inability to successfully lead the war. (two)
