Putin funded torture chambers in Kherson

“My cellmates were badly beaten,” Ukrainian Zhenia Dremo told the Guardian. The beginning of a martyrdom. Russian soldiers tortured his comrade with electric shocks in the genitals. Dremo: “I sat there for two hours and heard him scream.” Not an isolated case. The Russians are said to have repeatedly mistreated Ukrainians in torture chambers. The Ukrainian troops found such horror places after they managed to recapture the city of Kherson in November.

Dozens of residents were beaten, shocked with electric batons and subjected to water torture, and made to learn and recite pro-Russian slogans, as well as Russian poems and songs. Some Ukrainians were reportedly killed as a result of torture.

A team of Ukrainian and international lawyers led by British human rights lawyer Wayne Jordash is currently investigating the incidents at the torture center. According to his research, Russia planned and financed the “massive torture chambers”, as the “Guardian” goes on to report.

“Putin wants to destroy Ukrainian identity”

The legal team announced on Thursday that there are reportedly 20 such torture chambers in total. According to him, these are converted prisons, but also new torture cells, for example in an office building. “They were part of a calculated plan to terrorize, suppress and break the resistance in Ukraine,” the investigation experts said. Lead lawyer Jordash: “Putin wants to destroy Ukrainian identity.”

Drawing on plans from Putin’s armed forces, as well as information from more than a thousand surviving torture victims and simply the fact that 400 tortured people have disappeared, the lawyers have so far been able to collect a large number of facts and secure evidence. It is unclear whether the 400 people died or were simply taken to Russia.

All the prisoners had ties to the Ukrainian state. These include activists, journalists and teachers. The Russian security service is said to have led the mass torture cells and the Russian prison service, which cooperated with local people, was also involved. However, there is no further information about the men who tortured the Ukrainians. According to eyewitnesses, they wore balaclavas and were dressed in black. (two)
