Panama expands its marine protected areas EU countries demand more data transparency from Airbnb and CO

Panama will nearly double the size of its marine protected areas. During a conference on ocean protection, President Laurentino Cortizo signed a corresponding decree on Thursday (local time).

The area of the Banco Volcán Protected Area in the Caribbean will be expanded to nearly 94,000 square kilometers. As a result, more than 54 percent of Panama’s exclusive economic zone will be protected in the future compared to the current 30 percent.

At the international conference “Our Ocean” in Panama, representatives of governments, the private sector, organizations and civil society from 70 countries want to reach compromises to protect the oceans by Friday. The US government’s special envoy for climate issues, John Kerry, also attended the meeting. The conference was first held in 2014 at the initiative of the US government. (sda/dpa)
