The Greek media also picks up the story of another hero, Andreas Alikaniotis, 20 years old, who got out of the second wagon (one of those that suffered a frontal impact of the load) almost unharmed. Risking life, broke a window and saved ten young passengers from the flames. “I tried to calm down the girl who was in a very bad condition with severe burns,” this merchant marine engineering student explained to reporters.
Angelos Tsiamouras, originally from Crete, was traveling on Tuesday in coach number 6 of the Intercity back to Thessaloniki, where he is studying economics and business administration at the university, after spending the weekend at the carnival in Patras. “We felt three blows and We immediately realized that we were in danger“, he told the newspaper Peloponnese.
“I didn’t think about anything else, except that I had to help my teammates. Together with my friend Giorgos we ran towards cars 3 and 4 save as many people as possible and together with the rescuers we managed to get 16 people out. All he could think about was saving one more person. Nothing more. I had maximum adrenaline – said the student.
“In carriage number 3 we saw many dead people,” says Angelos. “Unfortunately, not much could be done. The fire spread. Wagon number 1 immediately disintegrated, number 2 was destroyed by fire.”
“I hope The state is now assuming its obligationsso that similar tragedies are not repeated in the future,” concludes Angelos.
