Vladimir Putin he changed his official agenda this thursday and convened the russian security council after the attack launched in the Bryansk regionon the border with Ukraine, by a group of armed men on a reconnaissance mission for the Ukrainian intelligence services, as they themselves announced.
The Russian president described the events as a “terrorist attack” and added: “They invaded the territory near the border and shot civilians. They saw that the car [que atacaron] He was a civilian, they saw the children inside, but they opened fire.” The governor of the region, Alexander Bogomaz, assured in his Telegram that there were fatalities and that a teenager was injured. He added that the drone attack took place in the nearby town of Sushany and that the Russian armed forces are carrying out an operation to “eliminate” the attackers.
On the Ukrainian side, the presidential advisor Mikhailo Podolyak said that it was Fr “classic provocation” from Russia. Likewise, Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Yusov said Financial Times that it is an “internal uprising” by an “independent formation” to “liberate” their country, without any training or indication from Kiev. Ukrainian forces have already warned that Russia could be preparing false flag attacks in the region where the events took place with the intention of justifying the intensification of hostilities.
In fact, a Russian group based in Ukraine, calls itself Russian Volunteer Corps, confirmed this hypothesis in their networks, although they denied that they shot civilians: «Friends, it happened… we crossed the border. We don’t fight civilians, we don’t kill unarmed people. It is time for the citizens of Russia to understand that they are not slaves”. In the video, two armed people appear waving a flag next to a Russian mailbox to indicate their location. Next to the person speaking, the leader of the group, Denís Nikitín, a well-known Russian fascist from the far-right White Rex gang, is clearly identified.
Connection with the Azov group
His profile is also connected with the Ukrainian ultra-right formation Azov. He lived in Germany and is associated with acts of violence and fascist groups in different countries. He has been banned from entering the European Union since 2019.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov confirmed that the Security Council will meet this Friday and that the Russian president canceled the planned trip to the southern Stavropol Territory “for obvious reasons.” He also admitted that the status of “special military operation” could be changed to “anti-terrorist operation”.
The Bryansk region has been on yellow alert for terrorism since the beginning of February. Until January 31, no territory could remain under that status for longer than 15 days, but Putin lifted that limit. Since April last year, six out of eight regions bordering Ukraine have introduced this regime.
