“We won the elections and we will prove it to the Nigerians,” Obi said in the capital Abuja on Thursday. According to the official results, Obi was in third place with 25 percent.
On Wednesday, the election authority declared the influential former governor of the mega metropolis of Lagos, Bola Tinubu of the governing party APC, the winner of the weekend’s elections with 36 percent of the vote.
Obi, who has a strong following among city dwellers and highly educated young people with his small working-class party, which is considered an outsider, wants to go to court because the handling of the election results was against the guidelines. “We will exhaust all legal and peaceful means to regain our mandate,” the 61-year-old announced.
The opposition in Africa’s largest economy, which has been beset by numerous crises, accuses the electoral authority of difficulties and possible fraud in sending the results, which were not – as intended – uploaded electronically, but were sometimes sent to the capital in person brought later. Election observers criticized the poor planning and lack of transparency. A record 87 million of the country’s 220 million residents registered to vote, but turnout was only 27 percent, lower than ever.
