Rescue workers find live dog 23 days after earthquake

According to Turkish media, the dog named Aleks was handed over to an animal protection organization in the badly damaged city of Antakya on Wednesday after being rescued.

A video of the rescue, released by the DHA news agency, shows helpers calling for the trapped animal between large concrete slabs. “He comes?” asks a rescuer crouched in a narrow cavity among the rubble of a collapsed house. “Aleks, come here, my dear,” a rescuer calls the dog. “Well done, my son.” Additional footage shows rescuers picking up the dog and giving it water.

“Everything that lives matters to us, people love animals,” said one local resident after the rescue, according to the DHA. Rescue workers have already rescued hundreds of buried cats, dogs, rabbits and birds in Antakya. Stories of this always cause a stir in Turkey, which is in a state of shock following what the World Health Organization (WHO) said was Europe’s most devastating natural disaster in 100 years. According to current counts, more than 44,000 people died in Turkey alone on February 6 in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
