She was the carnival queen of diversity. Now she is dead. According to activists, “Violeta” was murdered in northwestern Mexico.
The queen of sexual diversity has been beaten to death, according to the non-governmental organization that promotes the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people in the western state of Sinaloa.
“Violeta,” whose real name was Juventino Espinoza, was found dead by friends at her home in the municipality of San Miguel Zapotitlán on Tuesday three days after the coronation, local media reported.
The car the Queen was supposed to ride on during the Carnival parade was also destroyed before the event and had to be rebuilt.
As the organization “Sinaloa + Incluyente” (Sinaloa with more inclusion) further announced, 22 people had already been killed in Sinaloa over the past ten years because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Two others are missing. (SDA/dzc)
