After the first case of bird flu in a chicken farm, Argentina has temporarily stopped exporting poultry meat and eggs. That is in line with international standards, the agricultural health service reports Tuesday (local time).
With the export ban, the further spread of bird flu must be stopped. Since bird flu does not spread through the consumption of meat and eggs, manufacturers could continue to sell their products in Argentina.
Earlier, a case of bird flu was reported on a chicken farm in the province of Río Negro. So far, cases have only been reported in Argentina’s wild and domestic animals. The sale of live birds was already banned last week. If the disease spreads to commercial livestock farming, it could cause major economic damage. In the South American country, about 740 million chickens are slaughtered every year. Last year, Argentina exported $383 million worth of poultry meat.
The largest wave of bird flu ever documented is currently raging across several continents. Bird flu, also known as bird flu, is an infectious disease that mainly affects waterfowl and other birds. Experts fear that the H5N1 virus is increasingly adapting to mammals and can therefore become more dangerous for humans. (sda/dpa)
