Authorities called on locals and holidaymakers to stay at home. Many interurban roads were impassable due to snow or fallen trees, as the “Mallorca Zeitung” reported.
In the island’s capital, Palma, the carriageway of major roads collapsed in two places. No one was injured. Videos showed construction workers working in the morning to close an eight-metre-wide and four-metre-deep hole in an asphalt pavement. The reason was probably an underwash.
Gale-force winds with winds sometimes exceeding 100 kilometers per hour whipped waves up to eight meters high onto the rocky shores, especially in the north of the island. In the archipelago, the Tramuntana, the snow cover grew to half a meter in some places on Tuesday night. The day before, many curious spectators had come to the mountain village of Valldemossa to play in the snow. This caused long traffic jams on the roads.
Sometimes it also snowed in the lowlands and even on the beaches. But the snow did not last long in the resort towns. Palma and Ballermann were largely spared from the white splendor. Only in the higher-lying Son Vida district, where ex-footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger lives, among others, did some snowflakes form.
The heavy rain has caused significant damage in some cases. In Pollença, a picturesque village in the north, 171 liters of water per square meter fell within 24 hours. Normally, small streams became torrents and flooded the coastal areas. Cellars and underground garages were also full.
The storm should be gone by Wednesday. However, there are fears of more flooding as temperatures rise again and snow melts in the mountains. (SDA)
