Mallorca imposed strict rules on Ballermann

Garbage, puke, lavish pop songs and the smell of urine have long been part of the look of Mallorca’s legendary Ballermann party mile. Although the police are on the scene, they often cannot do anything to calm the partying crowd.

The drinking party is once again too much for the locals. They demand new rules and measures from their local government to contain the escalations. And indeed: before the start of the spring season, politicians published a new regulation – with hard rules.

Until now, in the high season from April to October, advertising alcohol, selling alcoholic beverages on the street and drinking at your discretion was prohibited on the legendary Schinkenstrasse in the center of the party mile. Clubs and bars had to have separate entrances and exits. These rules have now been extended to four additional zones.

The regulation also includes different scenarios for which new sanctions apply. Loud shouting or abusive remarks, as well as littering and damaging objects are punishable by law. Anyone who encourages other people to consume alcohol on the boulevard or on the beach will also have to deal with the law enforcement officers. Fines of up to 3,000 euros can be imposed for serious violations.

If you want to celebrate, you have to get yourself together a bit more with the expansion and stop drinking excessively. But this topic is not new. The local government of the holiday island has long been caught between the benefits of party tourism and the aftermath for its own population.

On the one hand, the economy can use the funds after the hard Corona period, on the other hand, there have always been protests. Bars had to close because they violated the so-called anti-alcohol tourism law. Now it has been adjusted again. The cabinet hopes that this will cause less nuisance for the local population. (A)
