Putin declined to comment on the renewed candidacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) has been tyrannizing Ukraine for more than a year and is waging a war of aggression against the country. At the moment, the Kremlin chief seems to be quite taken with it – so much so that he doesn’t even think about running again. According to his spokesman, he has not yet commented on his participation in the 2024 elections.

Putin is not in the pre-election mood, he has a lot to do, “that doesn’t suit him at all,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, 55, told the Moscow newspaper “Isvestia” on Tuesday. “We have not yet heard any statements from him in which he would have said whether he would run for office or not. That means it’s still a little early.”

Due to constitutional changes, Putin is allowed to run for office

The 70-year-old Putin has been in charge of the largest country in the world since the year 2000. Just over a year ago, he ordered the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

An amended constitution allows Putin to run again in the 2024 presidential election. In previous elections, the Kremlin chief had not announced his candidacy for a long time, while it was clear that he wanted to retain power.

Not a word about candidacy in State of the Union speech

In Putin’s 18th State of the Union speech on February 21, he also spoke about next year’s presidential election. It must be held with due regard for all democratic means.

The political powers agree: “The most important thing is the prosperity of the people, sovereignty and national interests.” Even with these words, he did not specifically announce his candidacy. (SDA/euc)
