Swiss-born Elly Schlein (37) surprisingly came out on top in the race for the presidency of the Italian Social Democratic Party. Even before all the votes had been counted, Swiss SP politicians congratulated her on Twitter.
“Avanti!” – The SP Switzerland is looking forward to working with her, Zurich National Councilor Fabian Molina (32) wrote on election night on short message service Twitter. In the same way, co-chairman of SP Switzerland Cédric Wermuth (37) congratulated the Italian fellow party on the victory.
According to Italian news agencies, Elly Schlein was ahead by 53.8 percent shortly after 11 p.m. Stefano Bonaccini (56), who was traded as the favorite, received 46.2 percent of the vote at the time.
The opponent, Bonaccini, also congratulated Schlein before all the votes were counted. Now it’s up to her to determine “the direction of the party”.
Schlein represents a departure for the ailing Italian Social Democratic Party. It is considered progressive, ecological and feminist. Schlein is open about her bisexuality, fights for a new form of leadership and advocates solidarity with migrants. In doing so, she quickly positioned herself as a counter-program for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. (SDA)
