After plans to overthrow a group of Reich citizens became known in December, the admission rules for the German Bundestag were tightened. Former members of the Bundestag would no longer automatically have lifelong access to the building, the “Berliner Morgenpost” reported on Sunday, referring to Greens MP Irene Mihalic. There will also be random person and bag checks at the entrance.
On December 7, the police and the federal prosecutor’s office deployed several thousand troops against a suspected terrorist network of Reich citizens who were alleged to have planned a violent overthrow. A former AfD member of parliament was also arrested in this regard. Among other things, the network is said to have planned a violent storming of parliament.
Since then, a reassessment of the access rules has been debated in the Bundestag. A resulting house rule change is now about to be completed, Mihalic confirmed on request. The competent committee had already approved them at the beginning of February. The necessary decision by the Council of Elders and publication in the Federal Gazette are still pending. The new rules are expected to take effect in March. (AFP)
