Switzerland cannot be neutral in view of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. “It’s about defending the international legal order and human rights,” said Ukrainian ambassador to Bern Iryna Venediktova.
“The Swiss principle of neutrality is based on similarities from earlier centuries,” Venediktova said in an interview with the “SonntagsZeitung”. “But with the emergence of international law after World War II, the situation has fundamentally changed.” Attack is illegal, defense is legal. “Other countries must help the attacked country maintain its sovereignty.”
But you respect Swiss neutrality, Venediktova said. “But please let other countries send their Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine.” She calls for more momentum in the amendment of the law that is being discussed in parliament on the transfer of weapons manufactured in Switzerland.
The situation today is different from a year ago, said the ambassador. “Given that the war continues, we depend on the broad support of the international community.” However, the previous Swiss aid deliveries are valuable and the support for mine clearance is also good. “The solidarity is great, that touches me.” (sda)
