Italian Supreme Court holds anarchist leader Alfredo Cospito in the strict regime of the solitary confinement in which he is, rejecting the appeal of his lawyers and despite the fact that he is on hunger strike.
The court has been deliberating since the morning of this Friday and the verdict, which was preceded by protests in various parts of the country in the past few days. was greeted by a group of anarchists and supporters waiting outside the courthouse in central Rome.
Cospito has been in solitary confinement, known as “41Bis”, since May 2022. He was sentenced to prison for shooting a businessman in the legs in 2012 and for planting two package bombs at the Carabineros officers’ school, which caused no injuries.
His case sparked an intense debate in Italy about the advisability of keeping him under this harsh regime, reserved for gangsters and the worst criminals and criticized by human rights organizations and international organizations.
The far-right government of Giorgia Meloni decided to keep him in “41Bis”, but he was recently transferred to the hospital unit of the prison in Milan (North). This is because the anarchist leader began a hunger strike on October 20 to protest his entry into this regime.
