Kaili’s friend is allowed out of prison with shackles – she stays inside

Former Vice-President of the European Parliament Eva Kaili is said to have accepted a bribe. That was the allegation in December. Her partner Francesco Giorgi took all the blame and asked if Kaili could take care of their daughter. Giorgi is now allowed to leave prison under certain conditions.

The Italian must continue his detention under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet, the public prosecutor’s office in Brussels announced after a decision by the responsible council chamber.

Eva Kaili is also in custody. Prosecutors said they would not appeal Thursday night’s decision.

Kaili and Giorgi are accused of corruption

The bribery scandal, which became public on December 9, concerns alleged influence by the governments of Qatar and Morocco on decisions by the EU parliament. The public prosecutor accuses the suspect of corruption, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization.

In addition to Kaili, alleged mastermind Antonio Panzeri is also in custody. In January, he signed an agreement with the prosecutor’s office in which he promised to make an integral contribution to clearing up the scandal. Giorgi most recently worked in the office of Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino, who was also arrested for possible involvement in the scandal. (SDA)
