Blizzard Warning issued for Los Angeles

The US weather service NWS warned on Friday that up to two meters of snow could fall on the hills around the metropolis in the US state of California. “Extremely dangerous conditions” are expected.

It is the first time since 1989 that a blizzard warning has been issued for Los Angeles. In fact, the inhabitants of the Californian coastal metropolis are used to the sun and pleasant temperatures all year round.

Power outages in affected areas

Large parts of the western United States and the northern part of the country have been affected by heavy snow storms since Wednesday. According to energy suppliers, more than 900,000 homes in the affected areas were without power on Thursday evening. Countless roads were closed and hundreds of flights were canceled at the airports. According to US media reports, a volunteer firefighter in the state of Michigan has died in a power cable accident.

Unusual heat in the south

Blizzards were also expected in the northern part of the east coast of the US. Further south on Thursday, on the other hand, there was an unusual heat. New temperature records have been set for this February day in both Washington and Baltimore, according to the local weather service. For example, 27 degrees was measured in the American capital.
