The prize in an international architecture competition for a house in a slum caused great joy among those involved in Brazil. “We are very happy with the result,” said a publication on the Instagram account of the collective “Coletivo Levante” from the city of Belo Horizonte on Thursday (local time), after the project Casa do Pomar do Cafezal won the prestigious architectural competition website “ArchDaily” won in the House of the Year category. “Here, the periphery is the center.”
Artist Kdu dos Anjos wrote on Instagram: “I swear I’m in tears, I don’t even know what to say. This award is for all the peripheries of the world. Tomorrow there will be a party in the favela!” According to the jury, his house of 70 square meters is characterized by the use of materials typical of Brazilian slums, with special attention to light and ventilation. This has resulted in a space with a high environmental quality.
From a distance, the Casa no Pomar do Cafezal is no different from the other houses in one of the largest favelas in the state of Minas Gerais. For example, the architects of “Coletivo Levante” used the typical exposed bricks, but placed them horizontally to improve insulation.
The aim of the group of architects, students and engineers is to win over manufacturers and sponsors for architecture in favelas with their projects. “We hope that the Casa do Pomar do Cafezal project will inspire many other projects in the periphery of Brazil,” she said in her Instagram post.
