Asda has imposed purchase restrictions eight rows of vegetables and fruits on Tuesday, while Morrisons did so at four from Wednesday.
Britain’s second largest supermarket group, Sainsbury’s, The Co-operative and Lidl GB There is currently no purchase limit.
“Severe weather conditions in southern Europe and northern Africa have affected the harvest of some fruit and vegetables, such as tomatoes and peppers,” said Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, which represents major supermarkets.
The outage is expected to last several weeks, he added.
