Ten dead in military operation in the West Bank

More than 100 people were injured, the Ministry of Health in Ramallah announced on Wednesday. At least five of them are in critical condition. The dead include a 72-year-old and a 16-year-old.

The Israeli army announced that the armed forces came under heavy fire during the attempted arrest of three terror suspects. Gunfire was then answered. All three suspects were shot. According to the army, they planned and partially carried out attacks. Ammunition and weapons were seized from the building where they were hiding. Two of the suspects belonged to the armed group “Lion’s Den”, another to the militant Palestinian organization Islamic Jihad.

A spokesman for the Islamist Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, said after the raid: “The patience of the Palestinian resistance in Gaza is coming to an end”. Islamic Jihad also announced “a response to the brutal aggression” in Gaza. Both Palestinian organizations are also active in the West Bank.

The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has long been extremely tense. Since the beginning of the year, nine Israelis and one Ukrainian have been killed in attacks by Palestinians. During the same period, 59 Palestinians were killed – they were shot in clashes with the Israeli army or after their own attacks. There are also repeated reports of violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, Israeli activists or soldiers. (SDA)
