You really shouldn’t listen to this liar. The profit we derive from the speeches of Kremlin rulers Vladimir Putin (70) can pull is like that minimumthat every minute of speaking time is one too many.
And yet the world would do well to listen to the rants of the Russian president. As obscene as the worldview Putin presented to his parliament and representatives of the Russian nobility on Tuesday morning, the threats posed by the tangle of accusations and bravado are just as real.
First, there wasn’t much news. Putin no longer wants to bind his country to the terms he negotiated with the Americans on nuclear disarmament (“New Start” treaty). It would be an illusion to believe that Moscow ever cared about such deals.
But otherwise: old wine in new bottles. The West, a continent infiltrated by pedophiles and Nazis, is responsible for the war. Russia is defending itself just now – and at the same time liberate the Ukrainians who suffer under the «Kyiv regime».
Putin did not say a word about US President Joe Biden’s (80) visit to Kiev. He did not say a word about the massive loss of personnel suffered by his army in the Donbass (Ukrainian sources recently spoke of more than 1,000 Russian soldiers killed every day). Not a word about the Russian position right disastrous course of the war in recent months.
Instead, Putin talked about new tax breaks for companies and new survivor support programs. Every family of a fallen soldier should have a personal social worker. If you were cynical, you would have to say: good times for social workers in Russia. You have a lot to do in the coming months.
Conclusion: Putin is stuck. Military – and apparently rhetorical too. His cabinet is still in play and there are still standing ovations for his crude theories. But if the second tier of Russian leadership has retained an ounce of sanity, Putin’s mendacious shadowy world is likely to come crashing down soon.
