Bribery by “El Chapo”: Ex-Mexico minister convicted At least three UN peacekeepers killed in Mali

A jury in New York has found former Mexico’s security minister Genaro García Luna guilty of taking millions in bribes from ex-drug lord “El Chapo”. According to the court, the jury decided on Tuesday after about four weeks of trial and three days of deliberations. García Luna now faces a long prison sentence.

Prosecutors had accused García Luna of protecting the cartel’s drug smuggling operations. The defendant’s defense, however, claimed that Luna had always been a man of integrity and was now the victim of revenge by the criminals he and the US had put behind bars.

Luna played a leading role in the Mexican government’s fight against drug trafficking during his tenure from 2006 to 2012, before which he was head of Mexico’s National Investigation Agency. The 54-year-old was arrested in 2019 in Dallas, Texas. His trial will take place in New York, where Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was sentenced to life imprisonment after being captured and extradited to Mexico. (sda/dpa)
