Nord Stream explosions are discussed in the Security Council

At the request of Russia, the UN Security Council will examine the explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 Baltic Sea pipelines on Tuesday. According to diplomats, there are currently no plans for a vote on a Russian draft resolution calling for an international investigation — headed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

A diplomat told the German news agency that Russia will push for a vote in the coming days. Tuesday’s meeting is expected to take place at 9:00 PM CET.

Four leaks in the pipes

According to Moscow, the explosions in September 2022, classified as sabotage, were aimed at Russia and Germany. The Kremlin accused the US of carrying out the attack. There is no evidence of US involvement. However, Russian politicians have been busy for days with unsubstantiated claims by American journalist Seymour hersh (85) who wrote, citing a single anonymous source, that US Navy divers were responsible for the explosions in the Baltic Sea. The White House dismissed the report as fabrication.

Russia’s draft resolution, available to the German press agency, also states that the attack came after “repeated threats” from the United States’ leadership. However, that was not the intention at first Germany will participate in the meeting in New York on Tuesday and takes the floor.

However, the Federal Republic, together with Sweden and Denmark, had written a letter to the Security Council, stressing that the joint investigations of the three countries are continuing and that it was not possible to predict when they would be completed.

The federal prosecutor’s office in Germany is investigating the explosions. The explosions had ruptured four leaks in the two Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines near the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. At the time, Russia had shut down Nord Stream 1 due to alleged technical problems. According to the Kremlin, the Nord Stream 2 line, which can still be used despite the damage, has not yet been approved by the German authorities. (SDA)
