US warns China that if it arms Russia, “it will have problems with many countries”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken JONATHAN ERNST | Reuters

“Washington is the one sending weapons to the battlefield, not Beijing,” replied foreign affairs spokesman Wang Wenbin

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned China on Sunday that if it supplies lethal weapons to Russia, it will have ” a real problem in relations with many other countries, not only with the United States». “We are concerned that China is considering supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine with lethal aid, something we are following very, very closely,” the US top diplomat said at a press conference in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.

“I will not state what the consequences would be”added Blinken, who reported that he conveyed this content to Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC), on the sidelines of a security conference in Munich.

China’s response came soon after. «The United States, not China, does not stop supplying weapons to the battlefield. The US is not qualified to dictate to China, and we will never accept the US dictating or imposing what China-Russia relations should be like,” foreign affairs spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a press conference on Thursday.

Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, China has maintained an ambiguous position in the framework of which he requested to respect the “territorial integrity of all countries”, including Ukraine, and to pay attention to the “legitimate concerns of all countries”, in relation to Russia. “China’s position on the crisis in Ukraine can be summed up in one sentence, which is to promote peace and dialogue. This is what the international community is looking for,” Wang added.

The spokesman also called on the US to “think about what it has done” and “take practical steps to calm the situation and promote peace”. “They need to stop blaming others and spreading false information. China will remain on the side of dialogue and peace and will play a constructive role in cooling the crisis,” he said.

At the meeting that Blinken held on Saturday with the director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Wang Yi as part of the conference in Munich, the American representative warned the interlocutor precisely about the supply of material aid to Russia.
