Scottish minister Forbes wants to succeed Sturgeon Greece wants to extend border fence with Turkey – for 100 million euros

Scottish Chancellor of the Exchequer Kate Forbes succeeds outgoing Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

“I am submitting my candidacy today to become the next Prime Minister of Scotland with the vision, experience and ability to inspire voters across Scotland,” the Scottish National Party (SNP) politician wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Forbes, who is only 32 years old, has very good chances of success. She is regarded as well acquainted with Scottish economics and staunchly religious and rather conservative, which may indicate a different political course from Sturgeon’s.

Shortly before, Secretary of Constitutional Affairs Angus Robertson, who was considered a favourite, had announced that he would not be running to succeed Sturgeon. With two small children, it is not the right time for him to play such a role, said the former SNP party leader in the British Parliament. Robertson is fluent in German because his mother is from Germany. He is considered an enthusiastic European.

Former Scottish Prime Minister Sturgeon announced her resignation last week after more than eight years at the helm of the party and government. The move is seen as a setback for the independence movement, which wants to separate Scotland from Britain.

So far, Health Minister Humza Yousaf and MP Ash Regan have also expressed interest in the post. The 37-year-old is one of the party’s leading politicians. Regan, 48, has been regarded as a party rebel since she left the cabinet over a bill.

Interested candidates can apply until Friday. SNP members can vote from March 13. The winner should be announced on March 27. (aeg/sda/dpa)
