After renewed missile launches from North Korea: Japan wants UN Security Council to meet rescue ship “Ocean Viking” in Italian port of Ravenna

Japan wants to request an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after North Korea repeatedly fired missiles.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters at his official residence on Monday. The South Korean military said neighboring North Korea had just fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the open sea. The two missiles were launched early in the morning (local time) from the western region of South Pyongan. They flew towards the Sea of Japan (Korean: Baltic Sea).

According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, they landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Only on Saturday did the largely isolated country fire a long-range missile that could theoretically reach US territory.

The Hwasongpho-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) reached its target area in the Sea of Japan after a flight of nearly 990 kilometers, state media reported. Such missiles are considered the main carriers for nuclear weapons. Tests of ICBMs and other ballistic missiles have been banned in North Korea by United Nations decrees. (sda/dpa)
